Apple II / II+ VGA Graphics Card – Sharp Color & Retro Monitor Modes

Upgrade your Apple II or Apple II+ with crisp, modern VGA output while preserving authentic Apple II graphics. This VGA graphics card is based on the open-source AppleII-VGA project by Mark Aikens and delivers stunningly sharp visuals on any VGA monitor.

The card comes fully preprogrammed for Apple II / II+ operation and is ready to use out of the box.

Key Features

  • Sharp VGA output with authentic Apple II color graphics
  • NTSC artifact color mode (default) for classic Apple II visuals
  • Selectable display modes via simple POKE commands, including:
    • Soft monochrome (no artifact color)
    • Green phosphor simulation
    • Amber phosphor simulation
  • Supports multiple monitor styles, perfect for both gaming and productivity
  • Demonstrated in photos running Stellar 7 with green phosphor simulation

Easy Firmware Updates

  • Uses a Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller, flush-mounted and edge-mounted for easy access
  • Updating firmware is simple:
    • Hold the white button on the Pico
    • Plug it into your computer via USB
    • The Pico appears as a drive — just drag and drop the firmware file
  • Future-proof: If you later want to use this card in an Apple IIe, simply download the appropriate firmware from GitHub and update it the same way

Advanced Software Support

  • Compatible with the latest AppleII-VGA releases, including:
    • A VGA configuration .DSK file with a menu-driven interface (no POKEs required)
    • Support for multiple fonts and languages
    • Lowercase character support
    • Ability to save custom display settings to the card’s flash memory

Installation Notes

  • Fits in any Apple II / II+ slot
  • Only additional requirement is a 5–6 ft VGA cable (not included)
  • Please route the VGA cable carefully to avoid stress on the card
Strain relief using a clamp or zip tie is recommended

Build Quality

  • High-quality PCB with gold ENIG finish
  • Clean, professional assembly

If you want, I can:

  • Tighten this further to fit a 78-character eBay title
  • Create a short “Key Features” box
  • Rewrite it in a more salesy or more technical tone
  • Add a compatibility disclaimer section for Apple IIe / IIc buyers
